Washing Machine Faults: What's Gone Wrong?

Start from what the machine is doing, not from a manual. Find your symptom below, check how urgent it is, and follow the link for the likely causes, the safe checks, and the Dublin repair price before you book.

A washing machine rarely just dies. It gives you a symptom first — it will not drain, it stops halfway, it bangs, it trips the switch. An error code, if you get one, only names a fault family: the code says the drain side failed, not which part on that side. So start here, from the symptom in your own words.

We are based on O'Connell Street, Dublin 1, trading since 1999. Call-out is €79, credited in full against the repair, with a fixed written price before work starts and a 1-year workmanship warranty. Call 645 465-6305 or book a repair.

Tripping the Switch — Stop Now

"It trips the fuse box every time it runs." Usually the heating element or motor shorting to earth. Stop using it and unplug it.

Overfilling or Not Filling — Stop Now / This Week

"It won't stop filling" or "it hums but no water comes in." Usually the inlet valve or pressure switch. For overfilling, turn the tap off straight away.

Leaking — Same Day

"There's water on the floor." Usually a door seal, hose or pump. Same day — stop now if the water is anywhere near sockets or electrics.

Not Draining — Same Day

"It finishes full of water." Usually a blocked filter or a failed drain pump. Do not force the door open over a drum of water.

Door Won't Open — Same Day

"The wash ended but the door is locked." Usually water still inside, or the interlock has failed. Wet laundry sours fast, so do not leave it days.

Won't Start — Same Day / This Week

"Lights on, press start, nothing." Usually the door interlock, a tripped supply, or the control board.

Won't Spin — This Week

"It washes but the clothes come out soaking." Usually an unbalanced load, worn motor brushes, or the machine refusing to spin because it cannot drain.

Drum Not Turning — This Week

"It fills and empties but the drum never moves." Usually a snapped belt, worn brushes, or the motor itself.

Stops Mid-Cycle — This Week

"It stops at the same minute every time." Usually slow draining, a furred heating element, or too much detergent foaming.

Noisy or Vibrating — This Week

"It sounds like a plane taking off on spin." Usually drum bearings, a loose counterweight, or something in the pump. Same day if it is banging hard.

Not Heating — This Week

"The wash runs but the water stays cold and clothes come out grubby." Usually the heating element, often furred up with limescale in hard-water parts of Dublin.

Smells & Mouldy Seal — This Week

"Black mould on the seal and a stale smell on clothes." Usually detergent residue and cold washes feeding mould in the seal folds.

Start with the symptom anyway. A code names a fault family, not the failed part — a drain code, for example, can mean a blocked filter, a jammed pump or the pump itself. Match what the machine is doing on this page, then check the code page for your brand if one is listed.

Tripping the switch is the one to take seriously — it means electricity is going somewhere it should not, so stop and unplug the machine. Overfilling and leaking near sockets are also stop-now faults because of the water. The rest are inconvenient rather than dangerous.

For a This Week fault like a mouldy seal or a cold wash, yes, within reason. For tripping, overfilling or leaking, no — every extra cycle risks a flood or worse damage. For not draining, one more cycle just leaves you with a heavier drum of water.

Call-out is €79, credited in full against the repair. Most repairs are €149–€249 all-in, and major repairs such as drum bearings, motor or main PCB are €279–€420. You get a fixed written price before work starts, and there is no second call-out charge if a part has to be ordered.
