Washing Machine Door Won't Open

A washing machine door that will not open is usually protecting you, not broken: most front loaders keep the door locked while there is water in the drum or the drum is still turning. If the cycle has finished, the drum is empty and the door is still locked, the interlock or handle has failed. Never force it.

Start with patience: many machines hold the lock for one to three minutes after the cycle ends while the interlock cools and releases. If the display still shows time remaining, a spin symbol, or a door-lock light, the machine believes the cycle is not finished. If everything shows finished and the drum is visibly empty, something in the locking chain has failed.

Why the door stays locked

Water still in the drum

The most common cause by far. If the pump could not empty the drum — a blocked filter full of hair, coins and lint is the usual story — the machine will not unlock into a flood. Look through the glass: if the water level is above the bottom of the door, the lock is doing its job. The underlying fault is a drain problem; see Samsung 5C, LG OE or Bosch E18 if your machine showed a code.

Failed door interlock

The interlock is a small electrically heated lock behind the door catch. It wears with every cycle, and when it fails it can fail locked. Symptoms: cycle finished, drum empty, a faint click when you try the door, but no release — or the opposite fault, where the lock never engages and the drum never turns (see drum not turning).

Broken handle or catch

If the handle feels loose, floppy or suddenly light, the plastic catch inside has snapped. The lock itself may be fine; the handle simply cannot pull the catch clear. Handles are model-specific parts, which is one reason forcing the door is a false economy.

How to get your laundry out safely

  • Wait three minutes after the cycle ends. Then switch the machine off, wait another minute, and try the door again — some interlocks only release with power off.
  • If there is water in the drum, drain it through the filter flap: pull the small drain hose (if fitted) or slowly unscrew the filter cap with a shallow tray and towels ready. Expect a litre or more. Once empty, the door usually releases by itself or after a power reset.
  • Many machines have a manual release tab beside the filter — a small plastic loop or lever you pull gently. Check your manual or the label inside the flap.
  • Never lever the door with a screwdriver, and never pull hard on the handle. You will break the catch, the handle or the door frame.
  • If the load has sat locked and wet for more than a day, run a short hot rinse with detergent once the door opens — damp laundry left warm and sealed grows mildew quickly, and the smell transfers into the next wash.

The Dublin angle

A locked door is a small emergency in a Dublin flat: school uniforms and work clothes sit in warm, damp water, and within a day the load smells and germs multiply on the fabrics — the wash has to be done again even once the door opens. In rented homes, remember Regulation 7 of the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019: the landlord must keep the provided washing machine in good working order, so a failed interlock is the landlord's repair unless the door was forced or damaged by misuse. If the machine is in a utility room or hot press space shared in a house conversion, tell your housemates before draining — the filter drain puts water on the floor by design.

One to three minutes is normal — the interlock releases as it cools. If ten minutes pass with the cycle finished and the drum empty, the interlock has likely failed and needs replacement.

Only after draining it. Use the filter flap at the front: drain through the small hose or by easing the filter cap open into a shallow tray. Once the water level drops, the lock normally releases. Never force the door against a drum full of water.

The handle and catch are model-specific plastic parts, usually fitted as part of an interlock visit at €149–€249 typical Dublin pricing. Forcing a door is what makes it expensive — it can crack the door frame, which is a far bigger part.

Yes — the same interlock. It has to lock before the board will run the motor or fill beyond a trickle. An interlock that fails to engage is replaced the same way.
