Where the water shows up tells you where it is coming from. Water at the front, under the door, points at the door seal or the detergent drawer. Water at the back points at the inlet or drain hoses and their connections. Water spreading from underneath the machine points inside: a split internal hose, the pump housing, or the heating element seal. Work through the location first and the list of causes gets short very quickly.
The usual sources of a leak
Door seal (gasket)
The grey rubber bellows seal is the number one leak source on a front loader. It perishes, tears at the fold, or gets cut by a coin or zip left in a pocket. Mould and germs build up in the folds where soap residue and dirty water sit, and a seal that smells is often a seal that is starting to split. A small drip at the bottom of the door, worst on fuller loads, is the classic sign.
Hoses and connections
The fill hose and its washers harden with age; the drain hose can chafe through where it rubs at the back of the machine or split at the pump end. Check the connections at the tap and at the machine — a slow weep there often only shows under pressure during a fill.
Detergent drawer overflow
Too much detergent, or a drawer and housing crusted with dried soap residue, diverts water down the front of the machine. If the leak is front-left and only happens in the first minutes of the cycle, clean the drawer and its housing jets before suspecting anything expensive. Blocked drawer outlets are common in hard-water homes, where scale narrows them further.
Element and internal splits
In hard-water areas, limescale builds on the heating element until it distorts and splits its seal — or the tub itself weeps at the element port. Water then appears underneath, mid-cycle, when the water is hot. That overlaps with washing machine not heating: an element leaking and an element failing often arrive together.
What to do right now
- Pause the machine. Turn off the cold water supply at the stopcock or the machine's isolation tap, and switch off at the socket.
- Mop up and pull the machine's plug — water and a live appliance do not mix. If water has reached sockets or the fuse board, do not touch them; see washing machine tripping the electrics.
- Photograph where the water appears: front, back or underneath, and at what point in the cycle.
- In an apartment, tell the neighbour below and your management company straight away — early notice limits the damage claim.
Apartment living makes this urgent in Dublin
Apartments are 27% of Dublin households, and in a flat your leak is somebody else's ceiling. A bowl of water per cycle becomes a management-company dispute and a repair bill for two homes if it runs for a week. Terraced houses, 33.4% of the stock, usually have the machine on a solid ground floor, which buys time — but laminate and timber floors still swell within days. If you rent, note that under the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2019, Regulation 7, your landlord must provide the washing machine and keep it in good working order — a leaking machine is the landlord's repair, unless the damage came from misuse. Our Dublin repair team can deal with landlords and letting agents directly if that helps.
The water in your area matters
Element and seal leaks are far more common on hard supplies: homes normally supplied by Leixlip — Swords, Lucan, Finglas — get water around 200 mg/L, and Bog of the Ring areas such as Balbriggan, Rush and Skerries around 336 mg/L, which is very hard. On the soft Ballymore Eustace supply in South Dublin, around 50 mg/L, leaks are more often simple perished rubber. Never assume all Dublin water is the same; the supply decides which parts fail.
