Zanussi (and its sister brands AEG and Electrolux, which share much of the same platform) groups faults by the first digit and refines them with the second. E20 on its own is the plain drain timeout. E21, E22, E23 and E24 refine it — draining during different stages, pump circuit faults and board-side pump drive faults respectively. The E30s move the suspicion from the pump to the pressure system that measures the water. Because the same code can be refined differently across model years, always have the model number from the door-rim label ready when you call.
E20 family: the machine cannot drain
The causes are the familiar drain chain, in order: the pump filter blocked with hair, coins, lint and grit; a pump jammed by an object or worn out; a kinked or blocked drain hose; or, in the E23/E24 refinements, an electrical fault in the pump circuit or its board driver. Safe checks mirror every other brand: switch off, drain through the filter flap into a tray, clean the filter, check the impeller turns freely, prove the hose, and run an empty drain. If the code returns on a clean filter, the pump or its circuit has failed. The full walk-through sits on our Bosch E18 page — different badge, same water.
E30 family: the machine cannot read the water level
Pressure switch and its air tube
The pressure sensor converts air pressure in a trap at the tub into a level reading. Soap residue, dirt and scale flakes clog the trap and tube until the reading sticks or wanders: the machine may refuse to start (thinks it is full), overfill (thinks it is empty — the dangerous one, see our won't fill / overfills page), stop mid-cycle, or report a drain fault that is not real, just as the Hotpoint does on our F05 page.
What the refinements suggest
- E31 / E32: pressure sensor signal faults — sensor out of range, faulty sensor or its wiring.
- E35: overfill protection triggered — the level rose too high; treat seriously, isolate the tap, and do not run the machine.
- E38: pressure trap blocked — the cleaning branch of the family.
- E40 family, for completeness: door lock faults — the door is not being seen as locked; see our door won't open page for the locking chain.
Safe checks
- For any E20: drain and clean the filter, check the impeller and hose, retest once on an empty drain programme.
- For any E30 with visible overfilling — water above the bottom of the door glass — switch off at the socket and close the tap. Do not retest.
- Note the exact code and the model number. "E30-something, drum empty" and "E30-something, drum full" lead to different parts.
What we test on the visit
We prove the drain mechanically and electrically for E20s, then move to the pressure system: trap and tube cleaned and pressure-tested, sensor output checked against the actual water level, wiring continuity confirmed. Only when the test names the part — pump, sensor, tube or board — is anything replaced.

The Dublin angle
Pressure traps clog with whatever is in the water and the wash. In hard-water districts — homes normally supplied by Leixlip at around 200 mg/L (Swords, Lucan, Finglas) and the Bog of the Ring at around 336 mg/L (Balbriggan, Rush, Skerries) — scale flakes are a steady ingredient in the trap alongside soap scum; on the soft Ballymore Eustace supply (~50 mg/L) the same fault is mostly detergent residue. Zanussi machines are common in Dublin's apartment stock too — 27% of households — where an E35 overfill ignored can mean water into the flat below.
