Right to Repair & WEEE: What Dublin Owners Actually Get

From 31 July 2026, washing machines sold in Ireland come under the EU Right to Repair rules. Here is what that changes in plain English, the rights you already have today against the retailer, and how to get rid of a dead machine free — and legally.

We are an independent Dublin workshop, trading since 1999, so we followed this one closely: it changes what we can get for your machine and how long we can keep it alive. It also gets talked up beyond what it says, so this page sticks to what the rules actually do.

What Changes on 31 July 2026

The EU Right to Repair rules apply in Ireland from 31 July 2026 and cover washing machines. In plain English, three things change:

  • Spare parts must be made available for 5 to 10 years after a model stops being sold. The pump, motor, board or seal for your machine cannot simply vanish from supply a couple of years after you buy it.
  • Repair information has to be accessible — the manuals and repair information repairers need cannot be locked away from the trade entirely.
  • A manufacturer cannot refuse repair support because an independent repairer worked on the machine before. If we fixed your machine last year, that cannot be used as a reason to block parts or support this year.

That last point is the one that matters most to our customers. A Dublin owner whose machine was repaired by an independent workshop like ours keeps their full position — a past independent repair is not a black mark against the machine. Ireland's national repair platform for all of this is RepairMyStuff.ie, the directory set up to connect owners with local repairers — you can find local repairers, including us, on RepairMyStuff.ie.

What the rules do not do is worth saying too, because the headlines overpromise. They do not force a manufacturer to repair a machine for free outside your consumer rights, they do not set the price of a repair, and they do not oblige anyone to keep a genuinely worn-out machine alive forever. What they guarantee is the supply side — parts and information stay available, and no door is closed to you because of who repaired the machine before. The decision to repair, and what it is worth paying, stays yours.

The Right You Already Have: The Retailer Owes You, for Up to 6 Years

Separate from Right to Repair, and available right now: under the Consumer Rights Act 2022, if a machine is faulty, your rights run against the retailer who sold it — not the manufacturer, and not a repair workshop — for up to 6 years. The CCPC is the authority to read on this, and it is the first route to try when a fairly new machine fails: the seller may have to repair, replace or refund, at no cost to you.

Know the difference between the two routes, because they solve different problems. A retailer claim is a legal remedy — it can be slow, it involves proof and correspondence, and it is aimed at a machine that was faulty. An engineer visit is a service: we come out, diagnose, and give you a fixed written price — €79 call-out credited in full, most repairs €149–€249, major jobs €279–€420 — and the machine is running again in days, with a 1-year workmanship warranty. Owners often run both in the right order: check the retailer route first on a young machine, and if that fails or the machine is simply worn rather than faulty, the repair maths on our repair or replace page tells you whether a paid repair makes sense.

WEEE: Getting Rid of a Dead Machine, Done Right

When a machine truly is finished, disposal in Ireland is free if you do it properly. Under the WEEE scheme, retailers must take back your old machine free of charge on a like-for-like basis when they deliver your new one — you do not pay extra for the old one to go back on the van. Dublin's civic amenity sites also accept washing machines for recycling. Between those two routes, there is never a need to pay for disposal.

Which brings us to the warning: never pay a stranger to "take it away." A man with a van offering cheap removal is very often unlicensed, and machines taken that way turn up fly-tipped in lanes and fields — with the householder who handed it over still in the frame for where it ended up. Use the retailer's free take-back or a civic amenity site, and the machine is recycled properly at no cost to you.

What This Means for Repair Prices

The practical effect lands on older machines. Parts availability is what kills most 8- and 9-year-old machines today — not the size of the fault, but the part being discontinued. With parts guaranteed for 5 to 10 years, a 9-year-old machine is more repairable after 2026 than it was before: the pump or board it needs stays in supply, so a standard-band repair stays possible instead of a forced replacement. That does not make every old machine worth repairing — bearings on a tired drum can still tip it over the line — but it moves the line in the owner's favour, and our job stays the same either way: fixed written price before work, and if it is not worth fixing, you pay only the €79 call-out and get the verdict in writing. Prices checked November 2026.

It applies in Ireland from 31 July 2026 and covers washing machines. Manufacturers must make spare parts available for 5 to 10 years and cannot refuse repair support because an independent repairer worked on the machine before.

No. Under the Right to Repair rules, a manufacturer cannot refuse repair support because of a prior independent repair. Separately, your Consumer Rights Act 2022 rights against the retailer — up to 6 years for faulty goods — are about the sale, not about who later repaired it.

If the machine is young and was faulty, try the retailer first — that remedy is free if it succeeds, and the CCPC sets out how it works. If the machine is older, worn rather than faulty, or you need it running this week, a repair visit is the practical route: €79 call-out credited in full, most repairs €149–€249.

Two free routes: the retailer must take the old machine back free, like-for-like, when delivering your new one under WEEE, and Dublin civic amenity sites accept machines. Never pay a stranger to take it away — unlicensed removal is how machines end up fly-tipped.

Not directly — nobody is setting our prices. What it does is keep parts in supply for 5 to 10 years, so older machines stay repairable instead of being written off for want of a part. A 9-year-old machine is more repairable after 2026 than before.
